Saga delivered her kittens on 66th day from the mating. I had just gone to bed at 0:15 and it was only 0:45
when she came to woke me up. She went under my blanket and would have wanted to deliver them in to my bed. After
negotiating for a while, she agreed to move to her own nest. Saga's breeders came when it was 2AM and after 25 minutes
the first kitten was out; a very lively black boy who weighted 140g. (Later we noticed that he has a few white spots in him)
Next one came after 20 minutes and it was a red girl (probably tabby or solid) who weighted 131 g. About 30 minutes later
came another red girl 130g. First girl has sharper ears and tuffs, the other one's ears are quite round at the moment. Girl nro 2 also has
quite lighter colour, especially in the face.
After those three were born, we waited for 1,5 hours for the next one. Saga was quite exhausted and contractions weren't
strong enough. At first we saw one foot and then everything but the head. 4th kitten was stuck for a long time without oxygen,
because placenta and embryo sac had been lost on the way. He was a red boy, 135g. We tried to resuscitate him,
but no luck.
After the boy there was another one coming. It was -surprise surprise- a red/white girl 126g. After that Saga clearly
calmed down and started to feed her kittens.
5.11.
All 4 are doing fine and growing fast! The biggest one, Sparke is already 189 g! and has gained 49g in total. Saga has
milk so I haven't given them any extra.
10.11.
Kittens are now one week old! They have gained weight nicely; Sparke and Snotra were able to double their birthweight and Skadi and Sibilja came very close, too. Weights have been going up a little slowlier these couple of days, I guess there hasn't been as much milk for them as before.
17.11.
Kittens have reached 2 weeks and they are beginning to move more in the nest and Sibilja is even trying to escape from there.. (no luck so far, but she is very determined). Skadi has her other eye only slightly open, but everyone else has both eyes open. All gained weight nicely during this week. Saga stilll has enough milk for them, hopefully she will continue to feed them as much for a couple of weeks at least.
24.11.
Kittens are now 3 weeks old and becoming more and more interested in the world outside their box.. But no-one has come out yet.
1.12.
This has been a busy week for the kittens. They came out from their box, started to play with toys and on wednesday they had they first taste of food. The girls still prefer milk, but Sparke is so hungry that he will eat anything ;-)
6.12.
Snotra changed her name to Sunna today. I've liked the name Sunna (sun goddess) for a long time, and I was named Shamicka's sister as Sunna when I thought that that was the girl that I wanted to buy. Sunna is from the "right" mythology for this litter, so why not change the name, when I still can? I haven't sent the registration papers yet, so it's still easy to change the name. For now she has been called Mini (little), even though she really isn't little at all ;-)
8.12.
Kittens are full of speed :-) They run, play, climb and try to find new places to explore. The beginning of last week they wanted to sleep in my closet, but now it's so old news and they are using the other side of my bedroom. The other side has been abandoned, because it's so boring ;-) Kittens have started to eat more and more "real" food, mostly because Saga's milk supplies have drained. Saga is still trying to feed them, but there isn't enough for 4 hungry little monkeys..
Sparke has found himself a loving home :-) And his name is now Remu (Aaltonen). He loves eating and it shows... He has left Sunna far behind him and probably Sunna isn't able to reach him any more. Skadi and Sibilja are quite even. Sibilja was the first one who started eating on her own, but now she is so busy playing that she barely has time to eat... And so I have to remind her every now and then. There has been some intrest about the red girls Skadi and Sunna and for Sibilja, too. Maybe next week I'll know which ones have a home yet :-)
15.12.
Kittens have decided that it's too boring to be in the bedroom all the time... so they have started exploring the other parts of the apartment. Saga is a bit upset about this ;-) And Roope and Lulu seem to be a bit afraid of the little ones..
29.12.
Kittens have reached 8 weeks! They have abandoned the bedroom complitely and they hang around the catmax and anywhere where the "big cats" spend their time. They are so adorable.. trying to fit in the crowd :-) Remu was the first one who managed to climb in the bookshelf and also managed to climb down. The girls prefer to stay down, but Remu seems to think that the higher the better.
All kittens are so adorable that I don't know how I can let them go! They come sleeping next to in the sofa, purring and looking at me as if they were saying "don't sell me.. I want to stay..." ;-) But of course you just can't keep them all.
Roope and Lulu have been very nice to the kittens lately. Shamicka is trying to take care of them a little too much (still) and Saga isn't happy about it. However Saga doesn't want to spend time with her kids anymore, so it's a good thing that someone does ;-) (Saga is getting her first heat after kittens and really couldn't care less about the babies).
5.1.2008
Now all my babies have been booked. It's exciting and sad at the same time. I'm very happy that they've all found a nice home, and a bit sad to let them go. But I'm telling myself that it won't be long until Shamicka will have her kittens (well, in the fall maybe ;-)).
Kittens had their first vaccinations yesterday and all 4 behaved really nicely.
